How Will the Treatment Affect My Lifestyle?

You may resume normal activity immediately following the procedure, unless otherwise directed by your physician. Your ophthalmologist will provide routine follow-up.

Are There Any After-effects Following the Procedure?

Some patients may experience a slight discomfort from being in the same position for 20 minutes, but this typically resolves quickly following the procedure. Some patients may also experience mild eye irritation that also quickly resolves. Your ophthalmologist can give you medication if your eye irritation persists.

What Will the Treatment be Like, What Are the Steps?

You will be given a topical anesthetic in both eyes. Anesthetic is given in the non- treatment eye to minimize the blink reflex. A hair bonnet will be placed on your head and an eye patch placed on the non-treatment eye. You will lower your chin onto a chin rest and your head will be held by a cap-like device to prevent it from moving during the treatment. A contact lens will be placed on your eye. The lens is held in place with light suction, allowing the physician to control your eye movement. You may or may not feel the contact lens, but it will not be painful.

The entire Oraya Therapy takes approximately 20 minutes, with the actual treatment lasting about four minutes. During the process, the physician may make several adjustments to assure that your head and eye are in the correct position. This is completely normal.

After the three X-ray beams have been delivered, the contact lens and head restraint will be removed and you will exit the treatment room. The ophthalmologist may repeat an eye exam and you will be free to go home immediately thereafter.

What Should I Expect When I Arrive on the Day of My Treatment?

Several tests will be performed prior to receiving Oraya Therapy. These tests may include a Visual Acuity Test, an OCT, and an Axial Length Measurement. These tests may be done prior to or on the same day as Oraya Therapy.

How Should I Prepare for Treatment Day?

No special preparation is needed. You may maintain your normal diet and activity prior to the treatment unless instructed otherwise by your physician.
